Course Description:

"It's Not Just 'Costume' Jewelry Anymore"

If art is self-expression, then jewelry art is the most intimate of all arts. It's the essence of personal style and the beginning of a fashion statement. Begin with a history of jewelry since the Industrial Revolution made it possible to produce quality pieces in quantity. We'll look at Art Deco, Edwardian, Victorian, Art Nouveau and more. Learn the basic makeup of jewelry and how the art of costume jewelry has evolved to include crystals, stones, semi-precious gems, plastics, ceramics and all types of metals. We'll look at the major producers of costume jewelry in America and Europe and how their designs echo fashions and vice-versa. We'll also add shopping tips on what to look for in jewelry and how to identify styles and manufacturers. The second night, you may bring two pieces of jewelry for appraisal.
