Gemological

Identification

I can provide identification services to determine the type of gem and the origin. Differentiation between naturals, synthetics and enhanced gems.

Natural

Natural gemstones always have the highest value due their rarity and the millennia that they require to form.

Synthetic

An artificially produced gemstone, constructed in a lab that has the same appearance and chemical composition as a natural gemstone. Synthetic Corundum is man made sapphire.

Enhanced

Various treatments are applied to elevate the appearance of gemstones. For example Emeralds are 'oiled' to fill in small voids and imperfections enhancing the color.

Imitation
An imitation is a material sold as a look alike to a natural gemstone. An example would be red glass made to appear as a garnet.

Authentication

Authenticating a piece is the process of proving it's origin. Many features and aspects can be used in the authentication process. The method of construction, materials used, embellishments, stamps or markings and can differentiate between and original and a reproduction.
